Specialized knee surgery and treatments

Care for the whole knee, from sports injuries to joint replacement. Open an area to see what it covers.

01 Knee osteoarthritis and joint replacement

  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Total knee replacement (total knee arthroplasty)
  • Partial knee replacement (unicompartmental knee arthroplasty)
  • Management of advanced degenerative knee disease

The smooth cartilage that covers the ends of the bones wears thin, so the joint gets stiff and painful, often on stairs or after sitting.

Treatment: Exercise, weight control and medication come first, then injections or realignment surgery when they help. When the joint is badly worn, a partial or total knee replacement resurfaces the worn bone ends with metal and plastic parts.

02 Sports injuries and knee ligament surgery

  • ACL, anterior cruciate ligament
  • PCL, posterior cruciate ligament
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and reconstruction
  • Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries and reconstruction
  • Medial and lateral collateral ligament (MCL/LCL) injuries
  • Multiligament knee injuries
  • Return-to-sport management

The two cruciate ligaments cross inside the knee. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) stops the shin from sliding forward under the thigh bone and usually tears in a twist or a sudden stop, often with a pop and fast swelling. The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) behind it stops the shin from sliding backwards and is most often hurt by a blow to the front of the bent knee.

The medial (MCL) and lateral (LCL) collateral ligaments on the inner and outer sides of the knee stretch or tear after a blow to the side of the knee.

Treatment: Depends on age, activity and how unstable the knee feels. Options range from structured physiotherapy and bracing to arthroscopic reconstruction.

03 Meniscal and cartilage injuries

  • Meniscal tears
  • Meniscal repair and preservation
  • Articular cartilage injuries
  • Arthroscopic treatment of meniscal and cartilage lesions

The two menisci are C-shaped cushions between the thigh bone and the shin bone. A tear can cause pain along the joint line, catching or locking.

Treatment: Many tears settle with rest and rehab. A tear that locks the knee may need arthroscopic repair or trimming.

04 Patellofemoral disorders and patellar instability

  • Recurrent patellar dislocation
  • Patellar instability
  • Patellofemoral maltracking
  • Surgical reconstruction for patellar instability

The kneecap slips partly or fully out of its groove, often during a twist, and may keep slipping afterwards. Most common in young, active people.

Treatment: Usually targeted strengthening. Repeated dislocations may need reconstruction of the ligament that holds the kneecap in place (MPFL).

05 Knee deformity and limb alignment correction

  • Varus and valgus knee deformities
  • Lower limb malalignment
  • Corrective osteotomy around the knee
  • Joint-preserving alignment surgery

06 Knee fractures and trauma

  • Fractures around the knee
  • Tibial plateau fractures
  • Patellar fractures
  • Distal femoral fractures

07 Knee arthroscopy and joint-preserving surgery

  • Diagnostic and therapeutic knee arthroscopy
  • Arthroscopic ligament reconstruction
  • Meniscal repair
  • Cartilage procedures
  • Joint-preserving knee surgery

08 Non-surgical and regenerative treatments

  • Non-operative management of knee disorders
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
  • Intra-articular injections
  • Rehabilitation and conservative treatment

Orthopedic surgery also covers fractures and other bone and joint problems.
